Walt Anderson confirmed that the penalties against the Texans were justified under current NFL rules during their game against the Chiefs.
Houston: So, there was quite a buzz about the Texans’ game against the Chiefs last Saturday. They lost 23-14, but it was the penalties that really got people talking.
Walt Anderson, the NFL’s officiating head honcho, jumped on NFL Network to explain that the refs made the right calls. He mentioned that there was some debate about a roughing the passer call on Texans’ Will Anderson, but the rules say if there’s any doubt, the flag has to fly.
Anderson also pointed out that replay assist could help in some cases, but in this instance, there was contact. So, the call stood.
He added that the Competition Committee might take another look at these rules in the offseason. But for now, it is what it is.
Another penalty was for unnecessary roughness on Mahomes after he slid late. It looked like two Texans players just bumped into each other, but Anderson said a Texans helmet grazed Mahomes while he was down. Unfortunately, replay assist can’t change that call.
