The Steelers have reportedly declined the Bears’ attempt to trade for Mike Tomlin, keeping their head coach off the market for now
Chicago: So, the Bears recently reached out to the Steelers about Mike Tomlin, but the Steelers said no way. Adam Schefter from ESPN broke the news.
The Bears are on the hunt for a new head coach and have chatted with a bunch of candidates since the season wrapped up. General manager Ryan Poles is really trying to shake things up and find the right fit. He mentioned they’re open to exploring all options to land the best coach.
But it turns out the Bears weren’t alone in their interest. Another team also called about Tomlin, but the Steelers shot them down too. Apparently, Tomlin has a no-trade clause in his contract, which makes him a tough catch.
It’s not clear when the Bears made their inquiry. Just the other day, Tomlin was asked if he thought other teams might come calling, and he simply said, “Save your time.”
Fans have been a bit grumpy about the Steelers not making the playoffs lately, but with Tomlin signing a three-year extension last June, it seems like he’s sticking around. The Steelers have had only three head coaches since 1969, so they value stability.
Meanwhile, the Bears are also looking at other options. One name that’s popped up is Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. He might be a good fit, especially since quarterback Caleb Williams has expressed interest in working with an offensive-minded coach.
