So, guess what? Mike Vrabel, the new head coach of the Patriots, is bringing in Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator. This news comes from Dianna Russini at The Athletic.
McDaniels has a long history with the Patriots, serving as their offensive coordinator for 13 seasons. He also spent five years as an assistant coach under Bill Belichick. Plus, Vrabel played linebacker in New England while McDaniels was on staff.
After being let go by the Tennessee Titans, Vrabel is looking to build a solid coaching staff, and who better to turn to than McDaniels? Last season, he worked as a consultant with the Browns after his Titans stint.
McDaniels is back in the fold with the Patriots. He first joined the team in 2001 and became the offensive coordinator in 2006. He had a brief stint as head coach of the Denver Broncos before returning to New England in 2012.
After leaving the Patriots in 2021, he took the head coach position with the Las Vegas Raiders but was fired after two seasons. Now, he’s ready to jump back into coaching.
With Vrabel focusing on defense, McDaniels will have the important job of developing quarterback Drake Maye. Maye showed a lot of promise as a rookie after being picked third overall in the 2024 draft.
McDaniels has a solid track record, especially during the Tom Brady era, which makes him a great fit for the Patriots as they look to nurture their next franchise quarterback.
