Matthew Stafford expresses confidence in his future after the Rams’ playoff exit, indicating he still has more football to play.
Los Angeles: After the Rams’ tough playoff loss to the Eagles, everyone’s buzzing about Matthew Stafford’s future. Will he come back for another season? He didn’t seem too worried about it right after the game.
Stafford mentioned he hadn’t given it much thought yet, but he’s definitely not ready to hang up his cleats. He feels he’s still got some good football left in him.
“I’ll take some time to think about it, but I feel like I was playing some pretty good ball,” he told the press. It’s clear he’s not done just yet.
At 36, Stafford has two years left on his contract, which is worth $49 million. There were talks about adjusting his deal before the season, but nothing came of it. He’s got a $4 million roster bonus coming up in March, but his $23 million salary for 2025 isn’t guaranteed.
If the Rams keep him at that salary, he’d be one of the top-paid QBs in the league. His stats this season were a bit lower than last year, but he still had a solid performance. He completed nearly 66% of his passes for over 3,700 yards, with 20 touchdowns and just eight picks.
In the playoff game against the Eagles, he threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns. His teammates have his back, too. Rams receiver Puka Nacua said they all believe in him and trust him to make plays.
With Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett behind him on the depth chart, it’s hard to see them stepping up to Stafford’s level if the Rams decide to move on. There are some free-agent QBs out there, but can they really replace what Stafford brings to the table? That’s a big question for the Rams moving forward.
