Jerry Jones has informally chatted with Pete Carroll about the Cowboys’ head coaching role, adding intrigue to the ongoing search.
Dallas: The Cowboys’ quest for a new head coach is turning into quite the drama. It’s like a reality show at this point.
So, here’s the scoop: Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is in the mix to be the 10th head coach. But wait, there’s more!
Nick Harris from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says Jerry Jones has had a casual chat with Pete Carroll, the former Seahawks coach. Apparently, it was informal, but there’s enough interest to make headlines.
As of now, no formal interview is on the table, according to Harris. Jones kicked off his search by talking to Colorado coach Deion Sanders, but that seems to have fizzled out.
So far, Jones has only met in person with Seattle assistant Leslie Frazier, former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, and Schottenheimer. Kellen Moore, the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, had a virtual sit-down since his team is still in the playoffs.
Now, here’s a twist: Schottenheimer worked under Carroll from 2018 to 2020. So, maybe Jones was picking Carroll’s brain about Schottenheimer. He’s been in Dallas for three seasons and was the offensive coordinator for the last two, though he didn’t call the plays under Mike McCarthy.
Carroll, who’s 73, is itching to get back into the NFL after taking a year off. He’s got 18 seasons of head coaching experience and even snagged a Super Bowl win in 2013.
Interestingly, Jones has a history of hiring familiar faces. If Schottenheimer gets the nod, he’ll join the ranks of Dave Campo and Jason Garrett as coaches promoted from within the Cowboys’ staff.
