San Francisco: The 49ers seem ready to part ways with linebacker De’Vondre Campbell. The big question is how they’ll do it.

They could just cut him, which is the easy route. But if they really want to send a message, suspending him would hit harder and let them reclaim some of his signing bonus.

Campbell’s on a one-year deal worth $5 million, with a signing bonus of $3.35 million and a salary of $1.21 million. That breaks down to about $67,222 for each game he plays.

But here’s the kicker: if they cut him, they might miss out on a bigger financial play. According to the CBA, if he refuses to play, they can take back 25% of that signing bonus. That’s a hefty $837,500 right there.

Plus, if they suspend him for a game, he could lose over $1.4 million of his total pay for 2024. Ouch!

And it’s not just Campbell who’s in this boat. The Ravens could do something similar with receiver Diontae Johnson. Even though they haven’t paid him any bonuses yet, his refusal to play could cost him over $3 million.

So, it makes sense why the 49ers haven’t just cut Campbell yet. He might actually prefer that route, but he definitely doesn’t want to end up writing a check back to the team for money they’ve already given him.
