The 49ers are exploring candidates for their special teams coordinator, interviewing Chris Banjo from the Broncos.
Coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch had a virtual sit-down with him. This was their second interview in just two days. The Broncos wrapped up their season with a tough loss to the Bills, so Banjo is looking for a new opportunity.
At 34, Banjo has a solid background. He played in the NFL for ten years before moving into coaching. The 49ers also interviewed Jett Modkins from the Lions, who has been working under their special teams coordinator for a while.
With these interviews, the 49ers have met the Rooney Rule requirements. They can now hire someone whenever they’re ready. Former 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen is also in the mix for the job.
The team recently let go of Brian Schneider, who had been with them for three seasons. It’s an exciting time for the 49ers as they look to fill this important role.
